EARLIEST DOWN SYNDROME CASE

EARLIEST DOWN SYNDROME CASE

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder and it's caused by the extra copy of chromosome 21. It was first described by British physician John Langdon Down in 1866 as a unique disorder. However, the earliest depiction of Down syndrome was found on Olmec statuettes from Mesoamerica that date as far back as 1500 B.C.

 Discoveries
The skeleton of a 5-7 years old child was discovered in 1989 from a 5th-7th century necropolis located in northeastern France. Archaeologists excavated it along with 93 other skeletons and had suspected the child may have had Down syndrome. However, they hadn't performed a rigorous analysis to confirm the diagnosis then.
Later, an archaeologist from the University of Bordeaux named So Maïté Rivollat and her colleagues studied the case. In order to understand its internal features, they examine the skull of the child by taking a computed tomography (CT) scan of it.

The analysis of French child
Researchers found that the skull of a 5-7 years old France child was short and broad, and flattened at the base which are the signs of Down syndrome. They also studied the child's skull and compared the dimensions and structure of it with the 78 other children of similar ages. The results showed the indicative of Down syndrome, which the other skulls lacked.
However, researchers couldn't find any evidence on the child that he was stigmatized during life. All the burial process seems like every other people on the cemetery and there was nothing different

3,200 YEAR-OLD TROUSERS

3,200 YEAR-OLD TROUSERS

Some years ago, an archaeological team discovered fragments of trousers contained within two separate tombs. The woollen fabric has been radiocarbon dated to between 1300-1000 BC.
The trousers were made of three independently woven pieces of fabric; rectangular pieces for each leg spanning the whole length from waistband to ankle, and one stepped cross-shaped crotch-piece which bridged the gap between the two side-pieces. The cloth did not appear to be cut, but each part was made on the loom to the correct size in order to fit a specific person. The crotch-piece was made substantially wider than needed for a normal stride. Instead it was made to allow sideward movement of the legs in a wide arc, allowing the wearer maximum freedom to take big strides forward as well as to mount and straddle a horse.

Dating to around 3,200 years old, the trousers come from a time when the first warriors on horseback appeared in the steppes of Eurasia and represent the earliest modern type trousers found so far.

3,000 year-old female statue found at citadel gate complex in southeast Turkey

3,000 year-old female statue found at citadel gate complex in southeast Turkey

Excavations led by University of Toronto archaeologists in southeast Turkey near the Syrian border have unearthed a beautifully carved head and upper torso of a female figure. The remnants are largely intact, although the face and chest appear to have been intentionally – possibly ritually – defaced in antiquity.

The preserved remnants are made of basalt and measure 1.1 metres long and 0.7 metres wide, suggesting the full figure of the statue would have been four to five metres high. The lower body is missing. The statue was found within a monumental gate complex that would have provided access to the upper citadel of Kunulua – later Tayinat – the capital of the Iron Age Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina (ca. 1000-738 BCE). The site is approximately 75 kilometres west of the Syrian city of Aleppo.
Her striking features include a ring of curls that protrude from beneath a shawl that covers her head, shoulders and back,” says Timothy Harrison, professor of near eastern archaeology in the Department of Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations at the University of Toronto (U of T) and director of U of T’s Tayinat Archaeological Project (TAP). Since 1999, TAP researchers have been documenting Tayinat’s exceptional cultural record to advance understanding of early social complexity and the rise of state-ordered societies in the ancient world.

200-Year-Old Vodka Originated From Selters Water

During the explorations in Gdańsk Bay, researchers discovered a 200-year-old stoneware seltzer bottle. The well-preserved and sealed bottle contains a 14-percent alcohol distillate.

The bottle has brand name “Selters” engraved on it. Selters is a supplier of high-quality carbonated water from the Taunus Mountains area in Germany. It’s one of the oldest types of mineral waters in Europe and now it is sold as a luxury product.

Destpite the springs of Selters dried at the beginning of 19th century, a group of Selters residents found another well in an area near local castle.
Despite the shape and the material of bottles has changed from stoneware to glass, Selters water quality is believed as the originally discovered.

This animal can be found in wet tropical forests and savannas of West and Central Africa. Chimpanzee are able to learn, perform the tasks of thinking organization, and has a better memory then any other animal. They have been known to beat the college educated in the memory test. They can be taught to use computers to solve numerical problems. These animals can quickly adapt and perform sign language to communicate with humans. Chimpanzees have been observed using advanced knowledge tools. This includes a spear to take animals out of small holes in trees, using branches to lure and catch prey, using stones to break nuts, and leaves a sponge to absorb water. They have seen an attack using tactical maneuvers, such as flanking prey. They often use mental manipulation within their families. Chimpanzee Genome Project is completed in 2005. This shows that chimpanzees share 98% genetically the same DNA as humans. It was approximately four to six million years since humans and chimpanzees that deviate from the evolution of their common ancestor. More recently, chimpanzees have been seen teaching sign language to their babies without human intervention. We were just beginning to understand the mental abilities of chimpanzees

2. Bottlenose dolphin
Come from cetacea family, which consists of dolphins and whales, dolphin considered as the most intelligent animals that inhabit the sea. Bottlenose Dolphin lives in the warm waters worldwide and is the most intelligent species of dolphins. They use echolocation to hunt prey, and certain forms of squeaks and whistles to communicate with one another. It is also interesting to see that in many occasions this dolphin show remorse for the other species and the signs of consciousness. Whales had been stranded for hours when Moko appeared and led the pair through the bars of sand for safety. It is a beautiful sight for locals and become national news.

3. Rhesus Monkey
Rhesus monkeys are known for intelligence and it has been widely used in biological and medical research. It has great memory, the ability to learn, and make decisions for themselves. They use facial expressions very similar to human and understood by humans. Rhesus Monkey’s have demonstrated suicidal tendencies, planning attacks, and highly complex social animals. They have a detailed system of shared vocal similarities to human communication. Research on the genome sequencing of the Rhesus Monkey in 2007, conclude that humans and apes share 93% of their genetic DNA. Humans and apes chromosome mosaic each other.

There are three living species of elephants, African Bush Elephant, African forest elephant and Asian elephant. All the offspring is expected to inherit the same genetic genius. In many cultures the elephant is seen as a symbol of wisdom and known for their extraordinary memories. They create a mental map and is said to remember the exact location of water holes that feeding them after not visited for years. Elephant brain is the largest of all land animals. Elephants have exceptional hearing and they use their ears and trunk to listen. They communicate with the bellows, roars, like a trumpet call, and can even send voice remotely using the land. This animal is one of the few species that has shown mirror self-recognition and identify themselves as independent.
